This year's Mother's Day may have come and gone, but we certainly don't need to wait for the holiday to realize the impact a mother has on a child's life is everlasting. As Gail Tsukiyama so eloquently put it, "Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There's no bond so strong in the entire world. No love so instantaneous and forgiving." Aka, moms are awesome!
You may remember the Mother's Day Pampering Giveaway contest we were running a little over a month ago. Kids had the chance to nominate their mom and tell us why they deserved the day of pampering and a few things they love most about their mom.
Talk about a heartwarming experience. We received a great response to this giveaway. There were so. many. amazing. entries and we were so lucky to get to learn about some really marvelous moms.
Our winning mother, Shana Doering, is one incredible woman. Shana is a guidance counselor at the Alcester-Hudson school. She is also the mom of four kids ages 21, 18, 14 and 11. If that isn't enough, Shana and her husband are foster parents and are currently fostering two kids ages 4 and 5.
Shana's oldest daughter, 21-year-old Shenia Doering, was the one who nominated her for this giveaway. One of the questions we asked on the nomination form was what she loves most about her mom.
Shenia's response was,
"Her kind heart. Not only is she extremely beautiful, but she opens our house up to children who are taken from bad places and need a loving family to take them in. She has paid electricity bills for people in the community who cannot afford to have power. We have had over 20 children come through our home over the past few years and she has even inspired other parents in our community to become foster parents. Watching her interact with children and people who are less fortunate than us is honestly one of the greatest things I've ever seen. She can put a smile on anyone's face by showing that she cares."
Talk about a special lady. Just reading Shenia's responses about her mom, I knew she was going to be an incredible woman.
Talk about an understatement.
When I met Shana and Shenia, they both had inviting smiles that made you feel like you had known them forever. I knew it was the start of what was going to be a great day.
The first stop was Three Ways Beautiful where hairstylist, Chelsey Greubel-Johnson gave Shana a fun new look for summer. For Shana's new color, Chelsey went through and did a heavy highlight and toned the color with a violet to give it a nice bright blonde look.
While we were waiting for Shana's hair to process, I asked her what her reaction was when she found out she was the winner of this giveaway. It was actually her daughter, Shenia who had called to tell her the good news.
Ironically enough, Shenia was sitting at a doctors appointment the day after we announced the winner when she remembered that she had entered her mom for this contest. Thinking to herself they never win anything, she didn't have high hopes but checked out our Facebook page to see who the winner was. As soon as she heard her mom's name in our Facebook live video, she called her mom.
Shana said that Shenia never calls her at work so her initial thought was something bad had happened. Shana described that when she found out she had won this day, she cried at her desk a little bit and she was totally taken aback by it. Shenia wasn't surprised at all though that her mom had won. She said that she is always so caring and giving to others and she just wanted to make her responses on the nomination form good enough to show how amazing her mom truly is.
When Shana's hair was done processing, it was time for a fun new cut. Chelsey did an angled cut with lots of layers and texturizing.
To style her hair Chelsey used the Aquage Silkening Oil and the Kenra Blow Dry Spray to speed up the drying process and finished the straightened look off with Aquage Beyond Shine and Finishing Spray.
Once Shana had a new hair look, the next stop was to Bombshell Beauty where the extremely talented makeup artist, Jodi Hunter, gave Shana a beautiful, yet natural look.
Jodi airbrushed Shana and gave her simple, natural eyes to make her beautiful blue eyes pop. For her cheeks, she did light contour and bronze for a natural glam look. Jodi even got Shana to dip her feet in the false eyelash pool and man - did they look stunning on her! To finish off the look, Jodi did a nude glossy lip that made the whole look come together.
As you can see, Shana is already naturally beautiful so Jodi just aided in bringing out all of her best features.
Our last stop of the day was back to Chelsea's Boutique where Shana picked out a new outfit to go with her hair and makeup. She chose one of our bestselling light blue tank dresses and paired it with a fun floral kimono and our super cute and comfortable Emily lace up sandals.
One of my favorite parts of the day was watching Shana and her daughter Shenia interact together. Shenia said she doesn't get to spend a lot of one-on-one time with her mom without any other kids around so this day was special for the both of them.
We wanted them to have something to remember these special moments so we finished the day off with a mini mother/daughter photo shoot with Rachel Mikaela Photography
and as you can see, the photos turned out absolutely amazing!
Everything about this day was perfect from start to finish. (I mean, look at that sunset!) Shana said she felt totally rejuvenated and is a day she will never forget. She explained that she thought to herself throughout the day that she needed to pinch herself because she couldn't believe this was really happening to her.
We shared so many laughs throughout the day. I cannot express enough how hard it is to showcase how truly amazing these two women are in 1,200 words, but you can see from their warm eyes and inviting smiles in the photos that they both are selfless, kind-hearted people who were more than deserving of a day like this.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this Mother's Day giveaway. We were truly touched by each and every response.
A HUGE thank you to Chelsey Greubel-Johnson with Three Ways Beautiful, Jodi Hunter with Bombshell Beauty and Rachel Boy with Rachel Mikela Photography. This day would not have been possible without your generous hearts and amazing talents.
